Effects of intermittent fasting on human health

Image removed. In a constantly evolving scientific landscape, our line of research at the University of Granada (UGR) is positioned at the forefront of the study of intermittent fasting and its impact on human health. We aim to unravel the potential of this nutritional strategy not only as a tool for metabolic and functional improvement, but also as an innovative resource to improve human health.

What do we investigate?

We focus on the rigorous evaluation of the physiological, metabolic and functional effects of intermittent fasting, both in healthy population and in individuals with clinical conditions. We study different modalities (such as 16:8, 5:2 or alternate-day fasting), analyzing their influence on body composition, insulin sensitivity, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular health and mitochondrial function. Special emphasis is placed on its application as a complementary strategy to surgical interventions, in order to improve preoperative functional capacity and accelerate postoperative recovery. Our goal is to provide a solid scientific basis for its safe and effective implementation in various clinical and healthcare contexts.
