Our goal is to deepen our understanding of the biological mechanisms that hinder the success of obesity treatments and to provide evidence-based solutions that improve their effectiveness and sustainability.
What do we research?
Our line of research focuses on analyzing the physiological responses triggered by caloric restriction, with special attention to the mechanisms that hinder weight maintenance after dietary intervention. We study how the body adapts its metabolism in contexts of weight loss, including reduced energy expenditure at rest, hormonal changes (such as leptin, ghrelin, insulin, and thyroid hormone), and alterations in body composition.
We also evaluate changes in mitochondrial function, metabolic efficiency, and sensitivity to hunger and satiety signals, factors that contribute to the phenomenon known as “rebound” or weight regain. In addition, we investigate strategies such as physical exercise, intermittent fasting, caloric periodization, and behavioral interventions to mitigate these compensatory adaptations and promote long-term sustainable weight loss.
