Manuel J. Castillo Garzón is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Granada, where he held the position of Full Professor of Medical Physiology for 30 years. He was the founder (1988) and main driving force behind the repeatedly awarded EFFECTS-262 research group (Clinical and Exercise Physiology. Science and Technology for Health 262), whose scientific history is inseparable from his vision and leadership.

A physician and PhD graduate from the University of Granada, his recognized career has been devoted to understanding how nutrition, physical exercise, and functional status influence health, metabolism, and aging. His work combines a deeply physiological perspective with a clear applied vocation, ranging from early studies on metabolism, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk to large multicenter projects such as AVENA, HELENA, and ALPHA, and more recent lines focused on exercise, healthy aging, and biomarkers such as S-Klotho.

Beyond his inclusion in the top 2% of the world's most influential researchers (Stanford-Elsevier ranking, in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics), his more than 350 scientific publications, his competitive national and international research projects, his seven six-year research merit awards (sexenios), and his supervision of numerous award-winning doctoral theses—mentoring over 40 researchers, several of whom now hold professorships and academic positions at various universities or relevant roles in the healthcare sector—his greatest legacy lies in having built a school of thought: training researchers and clinicians, paving new paths, and establishing a way of doing science that is rigorous, generous, and profoundly human. Much of what the EFFECTS-262 research group is today stems from his vision, his drive, and his unique way of understanding the University and Medicine.

In addition to his academic career, Professor Castillo Garzón is an expert in Anti-Aging and Longevity Medicine. He holds medical specialisations in Family Medicine, Clinical Analysis (MIR), and Clinical Biochemistry, as well as a Diplôme Universitaire d'Endocrinologie, Nutrition et Diététique. A former Medical Director, he currently works as a medical consultant and advisor for clinics and biotech companies focused on health and wellness. He is President of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Anti-Aging Medicine and Longevity (SEMAL), and serves as Regional Vice-President and member of the Advisory Board of the European Society of Preventive, Regenerative and Anti-Aging Medicine (ESAAM). He is also a regular invited speaker and organiser of national and international congresses and scientific events, and is frequently sought after for contributions to the media.
